Starts First Friday of Every Month! Intermediate Lindy Hop
Register Now!
Intermediate Lindy Hop! These intermediate series classes are intended for any students who have completed the beginning series class or who are comfortable with the beginning material. Don't worry! These classes will be paced appropriately for students who have been dancing for 2-6 months and there will be plenty of time for review and questions.
SPECIAL FOR JULY - We're offering a special "putting it all together" series in July for students who have learned the swing-out and basics of Lindy Hop but aren't comfortable dancing through an entire song. This song will teach you how to "put it all together" and plan to have GREAT DANCES!
Since there is so much more intermediate material than beginning material, we offer three series at this level. These series are called "A", "B", and "C." These series are independent of each other and contain different material so you do not need to have had "A" to take "B," for instance. We have included a broad range of topics and we are excited about being able to share all of this material with you!
These lessons will be held Friday nights from 7-8pm at Midtown Stomp! This price includes the four dances and the month's live band nights!
Rotating in all of our classes is a choice left up to the students. You do not need a partner, but can have one and not rotate partners if you prefer.

Series classes are available before the early pre-pay deadline for $54/month and $60/month after the deadline. Classes are available drop-in the first week $10 plus the cost of the dance. We do not allow drop-ins after the first week without instructor permission.

Topic Details
Charleston Topics - More advanced Charleston is taught as a seperate series, but is included in the intermediate series broken down into its basic elements so that it can be added in gradually. The three basic types of Charleston are side-by-side, tandem and 20's. Side-by-side is when the follow and lead are next to one another, typically on opposite feet. Tandem typically involves the follow in front of the lead and both dancers are doing the same footwork (rock-stepping typically on the left foot). 20's Charleston involves being face-to-face with a different footwork variation. These forms of Charleston can be incorporated into your lindy hop and each time Charleston is taught, the transitions into and out of Charleston will be included.
Musicality - Musicality is a theme throughout all of our classes. As your dancing vocabulary expands, you will be able to fit more of your moves to the music and feel more musical in your dancing. Understanding the structure of the music and "starting on the 1" is covered in the Beginning Lindy Hop class, the intermediate class will go a step further and discuss changing your dancing to hit breaks and show how simple moves can go with the music. A short choreography will be used to demonstrate dancing to the music with simple moves.
Sugar Pushes - A sugar push is a different basic step that can be used as an alternative to the swing out. There are many variations and turns that can be explored and this move can be used to really change up your dancing. The basic sugar push and a couple of turns will be taught in the Intermediate Lindy Hop class.
Dancing in Cramped Spaces - What do you do when there just isn't as much room? This topic will cover smaller moves and ways to use what you know to dance in less space.
Texas Tommy - This move involves the follow's hand going behind her back. There are several variations of this move that will be demonstrated and the simplest version of the technique used to lead an outside turn for the send out part of the swing out will be taught first. Other variations will be demonstrated and taught if time allows.
Styling - It is our opinion that too much styling too early can make it very difficult to remember connection and can hinder your ability to enjoy dancing. That said, this introduction to styling and swivels is a great way to start working on making your dancing look flashier. Remember, concentrate on good fundamentals and connection and think about styling second.
Basic Dips - Sure, you can often end a dance without a dip, but here is some dip technique and discussion of how to end songs.
Spins and Turns - There are different techniques for turning in place, turning while triple-stepping and turning while traveling. This topic provides some turning and spinning drills for leads and follows and discusses the connection and lead/follow technique for better turns and spins.
Faster Dancing - At this level, this means increasing the tempo at which you're comfortable dancing. Learning simple moves and transitions will enable you to dance to faster music. Intermediate dancers are not expected to be able to do swing outs to really, really fast music, but all of the techniques and topics we are covering are building up the skills to be able to dance faster and faster.
The instructors will modify the coursework for a series class if they decide it is a better path for the class or will better fit the students. We believe an intermediate dancer should have an understanding of the topics and material presented in these series classes. The pace of all of our classes will be modified to ensure that the majority of students are grasping the concepts. We hope that all students in the classes will be dancing outside out class and bringing questions and feedback to the instructors and Midtown Stomp staff. Each class will review the material of the previous classes and each series is built around some common themes.
We will also attempt to add notebook videos to the website providing an overview of the class. These videos are in no way intended to teach the material but instead provide a reference and a reminder for students in the class.
